The 2025-2026 Barr-Reeve Boys Basketball season will go down as one of the most memorable in the storied history of Viking Basketball. With a first-year head coach, a young roster, and just one returning senior who appeared in every game, the Vikings entered the season with plenty of talent but also plenty to prove. By the time the final horn sounded at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on March 28, Barr-Reeve had put together a remarkable 28-1 season, captured championships at every level of the postseason, and brought home the program’s third IHSAA Class 1A State Championship. Under first-year Barr-Reeve head coach Heath Howington, the Vikings established their identity early with unselfish basketball, disciplined defense, and a willingness to find ways to win in a variety of situations. Barr-Reeve opened the season with a 66-62 road victory over Washington and continued to build momentum throughout December. Wins over Orleans, Terre Haute South, Vincennes Lincoln and Christel House helped the Vikings enter the new year undefeated. The team's only setback came on January 6 in a 52-44 loss to Brownstown Central. It would also be the final time Barr-Reeve lost. The Vikings responded by winning their final 19 games of the season, including victories over Evansville Christian, Loogootee, North Daviess, Jasper, South Knox, Southridge and Bloomfield during the regular season. Barr-Reeve finished conference play a perfect 8-0, capturing the Blue Chip Conference Championship, and entered March with a 21-1 record. The postseason began at one of southern Indiana basketball's most historic venues — Jack Butcher Arena in Loogootee. Barr-Reeve opened sectional play against host Loogootee and earned a 48-35 victory. In the semifinal, the Vikings turned in one of their most dominant performances of the tournament, defeating North Daviess 63-30. That set up a championship matchup with No. 5 Orleans. Barr-Reeve defeated the Bulldogs 54-36 to claim the Class 1A Sectional Championship and advance to the regional round. The road to Indianapolis became considerably more dramatic one week later at the Washington Regional. Facing West Washington at the Hatchet House, Barr-Reeve found itself in a battle that would come down to the final moments. The Vikings survived, 55-53, earning the program another Regional Championship and a trip back to Washington for the Class 1A Semi-State. Semi-State Saturday provided two games that Viking fans will remember for years. In the semifinal, Barr-Reeve faced No. 9 Liberty Christian in a defensive battle. With the season hanging in the balance, sophomore Josh Miller delivered the game-winning basket as the Vikings escaped with a 39-37 victory. Waiting in the championship game was No. 3 Hauser. Once again, Barr-Reeve answered the challenge. Junior Kierson Lengacher delivered one of the biggest performances of the postseason, scoring 29 points as the Vikings defeated Hauser 52-47. The victory gave Barr-Reeve the Washington Semi-State Championship and punched the Vikings' ticket to Gainbridge Fieldhouse. For the eighth time in program history, Barr-Reeve Boys Basketball was headed to the State Finals. On Saturday, March 28, Barr-Reeve took the floor at Gainbridge Fieldhouse against Triton with the Class 1A State Championship on the line. The Vikings got off to a slow start, falling behind 6-0 and trailing 11-6 after the opening quarter. But Barr-Reeve remained composed and battled back to tie the game at 20-20 at halftime. The championship remained deadlocked at 30-30 late in the third quarter. Then the Vikings made their move. Sophomore Jaylon Graber gave Barr-Reeve the lead with a steal and layup. Moments later, senior Korben Boyd connected from three-point range. It was the beginning of a championship-clinching run. Boyd, who entered the game averaging just 2.5 points per contest, delivered when the moment was biggest. He scored 11 points in the State Championship game, including several crucial baskets during the second half. Barr-Reeve pulled away down the stretch, finishing the game on a 20-7 run and defeating Triton 50-37. The Vikings were State Champions. Sophomore Josh Miller led Barr-Reeve with 13 points and nine rebounds in the championship game. Graber added 11 points, four assists and two steals, while Boyd scored 11 off the bench. As a team, Barr-Reeve shot an outstanding 58.1 percent from the field, while holding Triton to 41 percent shooting and outrebounding the Trojans 23-16. When the final horn sounded, Barr-Reeve had completed a 28-1 season and captured the program's third boys basketball state championship, joining the championship teams of 2015 and 2021. The title also added another chapter to one of Indiana Class 1A basketball's most successful traditions. The 2026 appearance marked Barr-Reeve's eighth trip to the State Finals, following appearances in 2002, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2021. The celebration continued following the championship game when senior Korben Boyd was honored with the IHSAA Class 1A Mental Attitude Award. A team captain and four-year participant in both basketball and baseball, Boyd was recognized for his leadership, scholarship, character and athletic accomplishments. His performance on championship Saturday provided a fitting conclusion to his Barr-Reeve basketball career. After spending years watching previous Viking teams make their mark at the State Finals, Boyd helped deliver one of the defining performances of the 2026 championship. But the story of the 2025-2026 season was about much more than a record or a collection of trophies. It was about a group that continued to believe in one another. It was about defense, toughness and unselfish basketball. It was about winning close games when the season was on the line. It was about young players growing up quickly and seniors providing leadership when it mattered most. And ultimately, it was about adding another chapter to the tradition of Barr-Reeve Basketball. From opening night in Washington to sectional week at Jack Butcher Arena, from the Hatchet House to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Vikings kept finding a way. Twenty-eight wins. One loss.
